I have to agree with Dan, this does sound like a lot of work. But then again, when it comes to dealing with tax problems it sounds very do-able. I'm sure once you get going and keep it going, it works pretty well. Good article, thanx for the tips.

I actually think this is a great idea!!! I have been searching online for a way to organize my receipts, and I like to have the hardcopy of the receipt handy so that in case I need to return something, I will have it handy. (I'm an impulse shopper). Thanks for the great suggestion!

Sounds like an awful lot of work to me! How about tips like using Quicken to keep records of all this information? Quicken has accounts you can setup to track tax-related expenses. Then you can give the auditor the box of receipts and let them figure it out. Taping receipts for everything into a notebook is really a horrible waste of valuable time!!!

I've learned to love a Web application called XPenser. It lets me use SMS messages from my cell phone to record expenses as I incur them. (It also accepts from e-mail, twitter, and IM, and has a clean Web interface.)
