Stever Robbins, this article was brilliant. I am currently having such a problem managing social phone calls (as opposed to business ones) as I get interrupted all the time by people who just want to chat for hours. I have learnt a lot from your article and look forward to stopping enabling them by implementing your techniques.

I use email, so I have a legal record as to what has been said. I frequently find the clients who I have trouble with, have insisted on lots of phone calls which are not recorded. I had particular problem with one guy, and I would end all the call write everything down, and email it back to them 'as my interpretation of our call' please clarify if I have misunderstood anything.

Young ears might be listening at any and all times. At some point, the Santa thing is going to get out -- most likely during recess where Stever is nowhere to be found.

Peter asked..."How do I persuade people to not leave me voicemail at all?".

Am I missing something?

Don't have voicemail. Let them call back. It's what we had to do in the old days, before voicemail! :-)

Irene. Don't answer the phone!

I was really shocked at the no Santa comment in the podcast. I quite often listen to this in the car with my 7-year old and comments like that are not smart thinking. Please keep in mind that sometimes young ears might be listening.
